Cubana de Aviación Flight 972 – On May 18, 2018, Cubana de Aviación Flight 972 (CU-972) lost altitude shortly after takeoff from José Martí International Airport and crashed near the airport, CU-972 was on a domestic flight to Frank País Airport at Holguín in the east of Cuba. It was carrying 113 people altogether: 104 passengers and nine cre. Of the 113 on board, 3 survived the crash, all of whom are in critical condition. The aircraft was a leased Boeing 737-200 Global Air flight, operating on a scheduled domestic flight on behalf of Cubana de Aviación, from Havana to Holguín. In the months prior, Cubana had been taking several of its planes out of service due to mechanical problems with its own fleet, in part a result of the former United States embargo against Cuba, and relying on leased planes to maintain their service.[9] The aircraft was manufactured in 1979 and was 38 years old. Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel and other local authorities arrived at the site to observe and monitor the rescue efforts.
